Quality down vs. feathers – do you know the difference?

Contrary to popular belief, down and feathers are two completely different things and have different uses. In contrast to feathers, down has fibres that extend from a central feather ‘rib’.
Down is a three-dimensional structure made up of millions of fine filaments that grow from a central feather point, a light, fluffy undercoat that geese and ducks grow to keep warm.
Have you ever been pricked by the feathers in a down pillow or duvet? Now you know.

The colder the region the more likely it is that the bird will produce a warm down comforter
The common eider duck inhabits the sub-Arctic region and spends most of its life working in the waters around the polar circle. Their down has incredible insulating properties that protect them from freezing – winter temperatures in the North Atlantic can drop below zero degrees Celsius and the ocean, due to its salinity, can only remain liquid.

Most eider ducks nest in Iceland and harvesting eider duck feathers has been an Icelandic occupation for a thousand years. Although eider ducks are wild, they have become very affectionate towards humans and some can even be stroked while sitting in their nests.

Recent studies have confirmed the common knowledge that harvesting duck down does not cause any harm to the ducks or their eggs. In fact, an increasing number of harvesters are eco-volunteers who support wildlife reserves because it is the ducks’ feathers they collect. It is also worth noting that eider duck down is the only down being harvested – all other down is a by-product of the poultry meat industry.
